ChessFest on Queen Anne

An enthusiastic group gathered for the first Queen Anne Community Chess Festival last Saturday, June 17, 2006.. The event took place at the "Old Hay" school site, the home of the School District's Secondary Bilingual Orientation school (SBOC).

Queen Anne residents of all ages joined SBOC students and their parents to play simultaneous games with local chess master Leo Stefurak. He faced over 35 opponents at 16 chessboards. Meanwhile, individual games took place at separate tables and on the school's giant outdoor chessboard. The festivities concluded with refreshments, prizes for all participants, and entertainment by SBOC students who performed dances from Mongolia, Ethiopia, Mexico, and the Philippines.

The event was coordinated by Friends of Old Hay and supported by Queen Anne businesses including Metropolitan Market, Noah's Bagels, Communiqué, Tully's, HomeStreet Bank, Windermere, and McDonald's.
