Memories of the Counterbalance
Photocopies from UW Special Collections
All are Lawton Gowey Collection #209, Box 12, Folder 6

This one is the earliest photo--car 312 is headed uphill between
Highland and Prospect. The house at right was on the northeast corner of
Prospect & Queen Anne Ave. ca. 1917

Car 312 passing the Leona Apartments in this undated photo (in the 1920's). The house at right is
today a parking lot--the Leona has fortunately been saved and is being remodeled into condominiums.

Car 313 headed southbound at Comstock & Queen Anne Ave. dated 1940
It could easily have been stopped at this point to engage the counterbalance.

Another photo of Car 313 -- this time passing the Willis Apartments. The stop sign is located at
Roy St. Kinnear Mansion is out of view to the left. Dated 1940.

And in case you missed the advertisement on Car 313--here it is a bit larger!

Conductor connecting Car 314 at the top of the counterbalance--photo dated 1937

Seattle Municipal Street Railway outfitted cars #311 through 320 for the West Queen Anne
Counterbalance line. Built in 1902 by the Stephenson Car Co., most cars served until end of service in August, 1940.

See a 1910 Streetcar route map for Queen Anne, or listen to a story about the day the Counterbalance didn't get connected!
