  • Community input sought at first of three meetings for Lower Kinnear Park
  • Time: Thursday, February 25, 2010, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
  • Location: Bayview Retirement Community, 11 W. Aloha Street
  • Friends of Lower Kinnear Park (FOLKpark) is seeking the community’s ideas for revitalizing Lower Kinnear Park as a natural urban forest and scenic communal gathering spot.

The second of three meetings will take place on Thursday, February 25, 2010, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Bayview Retirement Community, 11 W. Aloha Street. Meeting details are available at www.folkpark.org.

HBB Landscape Architecture has been chosen to work with the Queen Anne community to develop a conceptual plan for the enhancement of Lower Kinnear Park.

All residents are invited to meet the landscape architects on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 10 a.m. for a community walk through the park. The group will meet at the park entrance at the west end of W. Roy St., rain or shine, for a lively “walk and talk” to learn more about the opportunities and challenges facing the park.

FOLKpark has set two other public meetings, each to be held from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays at Bayview Retirement Community. The second, on February 25, will present a draft plan based on community input from the January 14 meeting. The final meeting, on April 8, will concern the final plan and next steps.

A $15,000 grant from Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods to FOLKpark, an active group of community supporters, made the selection of a landscape architect possible.

“HBB quickly emerged as the top candidate among a field of highly-qualified firms,” said Debi Frausto, FOLKpark chair. “They have an impressive track record of relevant projects and are committed to working with the community. Now it’s up to us to tell them how we want to use our park.”

HBB worked with the Delridge community of West Seattle to create an open-space enhancement project along the Longfellow Creek corridor. The firm also developed and implemented plans for Log Boom and Swamp Creek Parks in Kenmore; Morgan Junction and Jack Block Parks in West Seattle, and Northridge Park and Trail in Bellingham, among others.

The firm employs sustainable, green designs and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) principles.

Lower Kinnear Park comprises five acres of urban forest at the west base of lower Queen Anne. It has entrances at the foot of W. Roy Street and from Elliott Ave. W. It is one of Seattle’s earliest parks.

This project is funded in part by a neighborhood Matching Fund award from the City of Seattle, Department of Neighborhoods. For more information about FOLKpark, visit www.folkpark.org.
