Preserving our Community Heritage...Now and For The Future

You're at 1st Ave. North and Highland Drive

The old photo looking west, was taken in about 1910 probably by Asahel Curtis, a long-time well known photographer from Seattle, who gave much of his collection to the Washington State Historical Society. Our copy is from the Les Hamilton collection, held in trust by your Society.

The now picture is taken down the hill at street level, as there are now houses located up the hill where the original shot was taken. The streetscape has changed a lot--the Treat House, while prominent in the early photo (it's the large house with the timbering on the upper story), barely shows up in today's photo due to all the trees (you can just see the green roof peeking out to the right of the large white apartment building). The Chappel Residence is just out of the "now" picture to the left.
