The modern handrails lack the historical charm of Seattle’s earliest stairs. But City Engineers still work to create some nice stairs. Note the generous landings and plentiful greenery at stair 78.
Stair 117 not only has the handrail/guardrail combo - it also has a wheelchair lift (see the right side of the photo).
Stair 139 is built alongside a retaining wall.
Stair 139 has a nice serpentine flow.
This stair (SPD 01) even returns the handrails around at the bottom.
Modern
Modern stairways are those that are ADA equipped (on some stairways). All, however, have railings that can be easily gripped, along with the presence of a lower handrail.
